Coping with loss on days of celebration
Mother's Day, Father's Day, and other days of celebration can be a time of great joy for many. But for some, these days can be a painful reminder of the loss of loved ones. As shop windows are adorned with gifts and greeting cards, upsetting feelings can be difficult to avoid.
Everybody manages their grief differently, so our Funeral team has put together some suggestions that may be helpful for coping with bereavement on these days.
Put yourself first
Plan ahead and have a think about how you would like to spend the day. You might like to be on your own or with friends and family. Some people find that getting some fresh air and having a quiet walk allows peaceful time for reflection. You might find that you are emotional on the day, so make plans that take this into account.
Mark the day with an act of memorial
You can do this by lighting a candle, planting a flower, or visiting the final resting place of your loved one. You may also find it useful to write a card so you can participate in the traditional celebration and thanks of your family member. You could leave this card in a place of significance, or keep it for your own reflection in the future.
Cherish memories and create new ones
What were your favourite things to do with your loved one? You may find some comfort doing the same things you used to do together at this time of the year, such as cooking a favourite meal or visiting a special place. Alternatively, you may consider creating your own traditions to honour this day that makes it special for you ― like writing in a journal or raising a toast to loved ones.
Seek support
If you are finding the lead up to the day difficult, don’t be afraid to ask for reach out. If you'd rather not speak to someone you know personally, there are many organisations that can help.
