Modern slavery awareness
Monday 18th October is Anti-Slavery Day - an opportunity to raise awareness of issues such as human trafficking and modern slavery. In support of the campaign, our pharmacies will be supplying information on receipts and in leaflets.
The National Crime Agency say that although it’s impossible to know exactly how many victims there are, they do know that modern slavery is on the increase.
Modern slavery is an issue all over the UK, and many cases in Lincolnshire have come to light over the last few years.
In last year’s report on modern slavery by the UK Office for National Statistics, it was outlined that many victims are hidden away, unable to leave their situation, or may not come forward due to fear or shame.
Victims of modern slavery often find themselves isolated from society. However, some victims can access healthcare settings. 1 in 8 NHS professionals have reported having contact with a patient they suspected may have been trafficked.
On Anti-Slavery Day and throughout the rest of the week, we will be distributing leaflets via our pharmacies. These leaflets will be concealed in the bags provided by the pharmacies, to enable potential victims to receive critical information discreetly.
The leaflets provide the modern slavery and exploitation helpline contact details and encourages anyone who feels that they, or someone they know, may be a victim of modern slavery to get in touch.
Details will also be printed on all receipts, so even if a customer just comes in to buy a pack of paracetamol, they will leave with valuable information.
It’s widely accepted that healthcare settings have a significant role to play in supporting victims in getting the help that they need.
Mark Foulds, Security Manager at Lincolnshire Co-op, said: “Evidence suggests that one of the most effective ways to reach potential victims is through our pharmacies.
“We’re committed to making life better in our communities, so it’s only natural that we would take action in support of Anti-Slavery Day.”
