Get active and move more
We all know there are many benefits to physical activity, it can reduce the risk of developing a number of diseases and improve our general wellbeing.
Let's get moving!
Benefits of physical activity
People who exercise regularly have a lower risk of developing many long-term (chronic) conditions and research shows that physical activity can also boost self-esteem, mood, sleep quality and energy, as well as reducing your risk of stress, clinical depression, dementia and Alzheimer's disease. This is why exercise is essential if you want to live a healthy and fulfilling life into old age.
Adults should do at least 150 minutes of moderate intensity aerobic activity per week, for example fast walking or cycling. But physical activity isn’t just sports, it can include going for a walk after lunch, getting off the bus one or two stops earlier, choosing the stairs instead of the lift, or even gardening.
Find the right activity for you
For most people, the easiest way to get moving is to make activity part of everyday life, like walking or cycling instead of using the car to get around. However, the more you do, the better, and taking part in activities such as sports and exercise will make you even healthier. Finding something you enjoy can make all the difference.
