Antimalarials
Understanding malaria
Malaria is a serious tropical disease caused by parasites transmitted through the bites of infected mosquitoes. If it isn’t diagnosed and treated quickly, it can lead to severe illness and, in some cases, be fatal.
The regions most affected by malaria include large areas of Africa and Asia, Central and South America, Dominican Republic and Haiti, parts of the Middle East and some Pacific islands.
Importance of antimalarials
Antimalarials are medications used to prevent and treat malaria. For travellers visiting areas where malaria is present, taking appropriate antimalarial medication is essential to reduce the risk of infection.
Our participating pharmacies can prescribe antimalarials and provide travel advice on keeping you healthy during your trip.
Types of antimalarials offered
- Malaria tablets: Oral medications taken before, during, and after travel to regions affected by malaria. They are prescribed based on the destination's specific malaria risks and the traveller’s medical history.
- Advice on antimalarial choice: Our travel health pharmacists offer personalised recommendations based on travel itinerary, duration of stay, and individual health considerations.
- Education on malaria prevention: Information on mosquito bite prevention strategies, including insect repellents, mosquito nets, and appropriate clothing.
Choosing the right antimalarial
- Consultation: Schedule a consultation with our pharmacists before your trip to discuss your itinerary and medical history.
- Prescription: Receive a prescription tailored to your specific needs, ensuring you have the most effective antimalarial for your destination.
- Administration: Understand the dosage schedule and any potential side effects of your chosen antimalarial medication.
Additional travel health advice
- Mosquito bite prevention: Use insect repellents containing DEET, wear long sleeves and pants during evenings, and sleep under mosquito nets if accommodations are not fully screened.
- Seek medical attention: Be aware of malaria symptoms such as fever, chills, headache, and muscle aches. Seek medical attention immediately if symptoms develop, even if you have been taking antimalarials.
