Malarone

What is Malaria?

Malaria is a serious and sometimes fatal disease caused by parasites of the genus plasmodium, transmitted through the bites of infected mosquitoes.

It is prevalent in many tropical and subtropical regions worldwide, including parts of Africa, Asia, and South America. Symptoms of malaria include fever, chills, and flu-like illness, and if not treated promptly, it can lead to severe complications and death.

Importance of malaria prevention

Travellers to areas where malaria is endemic are at risk of contracting the disease. Preventive measures, including antimalarial medications, are crucial to protect against infection. Malarone is one of the most effective medications available for malaria prevention.

Our participating pharmacies offer Malarone as part of our travel health services. Malarone is a combination medication containing atovaquone and proguanil, which work together to prevent malaria.

How does Malarone work?

Malarone interferes with the growth of malaria parasites in the liver and bloodstream. It is highly effective in preventing malaria and is well-tolerated by most travellers.

Who Should Take Malarone?

  • Travelers to malaria-endemic areas: Those visiting regions where malaria transmission occurs.
  • Long-term travellers: Individuals planning extended stays in malaria-risk areas.
  • People with specific health concerns: Those who may not tolerate other antimalarial medications well.

How much is Malarone?

Branded Malarone: Adult £2.95 per tablet, Paediatric £1.10 per tablet.

Generic Malarone: Adult £1.75* per tablet.

*Treatments are based on clinical assessment. Antimalarials are subject to a minimum charge of £9.65 per course.
