Jet lag

What is jet lag?

Jet lag, also known as desynchronosis, is a temporary sleep disorder that occurs when your internal body clock is out of sync with the time zone you're travelling to. It can happen when you travel quickly across multiple time zones, disrupting your normal sleep-wake cycles.

Symptoms of jet lag

Common symptoms of jet lag include:

  • Fatigue and exhaustion

  • Difficulty concentrating

  • Insomnia or disturbed sleep

  • Digestive issues

  • Mood changes and irritability

  • A general feeling of unwellness

Tips to combat jet lag

Several effective strategies can help minimise jet lag and make your travel experience more comfortable:

  • Adjust your sleep schedule: Before you travel, gradually adjust your sleep schedule to match your destination’s time zone. This can help your body acclimatise faster once you arrive.
  • Stay hydrated: Dehydration can worsen the symptoms of jet lag. Drink plenty of water before, during, and after your flight.
  • Light exposure: Spend time in natural sunlight when you arrive at your destination to help reset your circadian rhythm.
  • Manage sleep on the plane: If you're traveling east, try sleeping on the plane. If you're traveling west, try staying awake. If needed, use earplugs, eye masks, and neck pillows to make sleeping easier.
  • Avoid caffeine and alcohol: Both drugs can interfere with your sleep patterns. Stick to water and herbal teas during your flight.
  • Healthy eating: Eating light, healthy meals can help you feel better. Avoid heavy or rich foods that can disrupt digestion.
  • Exercise: Light exercise can help reduce the symptoms of jet lag. Consider walking or stretching during long flights and after you arrive.
  • Melatonin supplements: Some travellers find that taking melatonin supplements can help reset their body clock. Consult with a healthcare provider before using any supplements.
