Dengue Fever
Understanding dengue fever
Dengue fever is a viral infection transmitted by mosquitoes infected with any one of the four dengue virus serotypes. It is prevalent in tropical and subtropical regions, including parts of Southeast Asia, the Caribbean, and Central and South America.
It can range from mild to severe and, in some cases, can be life-threatening if it develops into severe dengue (also known as dengue haemorrhagic fever).
Importance of dengue vaccination
Travellers to endemic areas should protect themselves against mosquito bites to minimise their risk of dengue fever.
Protection against mosquito bites
- Use of repellents: Apply insect repellents containing DEET, picaridin, or oil of lemon eucalyptus on exposed skin.
- Wear protective clothing: Long-sleeved shirts, long pants, socks, and shoes can provide physical barriers against mosquito bites.
- Use bed nets: Sleep under mosquito nets, especially if the accommodation is not adequately screened or air-conditioned.
- Avoid peak mosquito hours: Mosquitoes that transmit dengue are most active during dawn and dusk, so take extra precautions during these times.
Symptoms of dengue fever
Symptoms typically appear 4-10 days after being bitten by an infected mosquito. They may include high fever, severe headache, pain behind the eyes, joint and muscle pain, rash, and mild bleeding (e.g. nosebleeds, gum bleeding).
