Diptheria, Tetanus, & Polio

Understanding diphtheria, tetanus, and polio

Diphtheria, tetanus, and polio are serious diseases that pose significant health risks, especially for travellers.

  • Diphtheria is a bacterial infection that affects the mucous membranes of the throat and nose. In some cases, it can lead to breathing difficulties, heart failure, paralysis, or worse.
  • Tetanus (lockjaw) is a bacterial infection that causes painful muscle stiffness and spasms, particularly in the jaw and neck. Without treatment, it can be fatal.
  • Polio is a viral infection that can lead to permanent paralysis or potentially worse, primarily affecting children but also posing risks to unvaccinated adults.

Importance of vaccination

Vaccination is crucial for protecting against these potentially life-threatening diseases. For travellers, maintaining up-to-date vaccinations is essential to prevent outbreaks and protect both personal health and public safety.

At our participating pharmacies, we offer a combined vaccine for diphtheria, tetanus, and polio (DTP) as part of our travel health services. This vaccine is an effective and convenient way to protect you against all three diseases.

How the DTP vaccine works

The DTP vaccine contains inactivated toxins and virus particles that stimulate the immune system to produce antibodies. These antibodies provide immunity, protecting you from future infections of Diphtheria, Tetanus, and Polio.

Who should get vaccinated?

  • Travellers to endemic areas: those visiting regions where these diseases persist.
  • Humanitarian workers: Individuals working in disaster relief or areas with low vaccination coverage.
  • Long-term travellers: People planning extended stays in regions with a higher risk of diphtheria, tetanus, and polio.
  • Routine boosters: Adults should receive a booster every ten years to maintain immunity.
