Japanese Encephalitis
What is Japanese encephalitis?
Japanese encephalitis (JE) is a serious viral infection transmitted through the bite of infected mosquitoes. The virus primarily affects the brain and can lead to severe neurological complications or even death.
It is mostly found in rural and agricultural areas of Asia and the Western Pacific, particularly during and after the rainy season when mosquito populations are highest.
Importance of Japanese encephalitis vaccination
While the risk of contracting Japanese encephalitis for travellers is generally low, those visiting endemic areas for extended periods, especially in rural regions, are at higher risk. Vaccination is the most effective way to prevent this potentially fatal disease, providing peace of mind for travellers heading to high-risk areas.
Our participating pharmacies offer the Japanese encephalitis vaccine as part of our travel health services. The inactivated vaccine is designed to protect against the JE virus.
How Ixiaro works
Ixiaro is administered in two doses:
- First dose: Ideally given at least six weeks before travel.
- Second dose: Administered 28 days after the first dose, but must be completed at least one week before travel to ensure full effectiveness.
The vaccine stimulates the immune system to produce antibodies against the JE virus, offering long-term protection.
How much is a Japanese encephalitis vaccination?
£198 for two doses.
