Measles, Mumps, & Rubella (MMR)

Understanding measles, mumps, & rubella (MMR)

Measles, mumps, and rubella are highly contagious viral diseases that can lead to serious health complications. These diseases are preventable through vaccination, which is crucial for maintaining personal health and preventing outbreaks, especially when travelling to regions where these diseases are more prevalent.

  • Measles: Causes fever, cough, runny nose, inflamed eyes, and a characteristic red rash. It can lead to severe complications such as pneumonia and encephalitis.
  • Mumps: Characterised by swelling of the salivary glands, fever, headache, and muscle aches. Complications can include meningitis, encephalitis, and hearing loss.
  • Rubella (German Measles): Causes mild fever and rash but can lead to serious birth defects if contracted by pregnant women.

Importance of the MMR vaccine

The MMR vaccine provides immunity against measles, mumps, and rubella. Vaccination is especially important for travellers, as these diseases remain common in many parts of the world. Ensuring you're vaccinated helps protect yourself and the communities you visit.

Our participating pharmacies offer the MMR vaccine as part of our travel health services. Our trained pharmacists can administer the vaccine and advise on additional precautions when travelling.
