Meningitis
Understanding meningitis
Meningitis is an inflammation of the membranes surrounding the brain and spinal cord, often caused by bacterial or viral infections. If not treated promptly, it can lead to severe complications, including brain damage, hearing loss, or worse.
The importance of meningitis vaccination
Travellers to certain parts of the world are at higher risk of contracting meningitis, particularly in regions where the disease is endemic, or outbreaks occur frequently.
Vaccination is a critical preventive measure to protect yourself from this potentially life-threatening disease.
Our participating pharmacies offer meningitis vaccines as part of our comprehensive travel health services. Our vaccines protect against the most common and dangerous strains of meningococcal bacteria.
Types of Meningitis vaccines
- MenACWY vaccine: this vaccine protects against four strains of meningococcal bacteria (A, C, W, and Y). It is particularly important for travellers to sub-Saharan Africa and parts of Saudi Arabia.
- MenB vaccine: this vaccine protects against meningococcal group B bacteria. Although less commonly required for travel, it is essential in some high-risk areas.
Who should get vaccinated?
- Travellers to high-risk areas: Those visiting the "meningitis belt" in sub-Saharan Africa or countries with known outbreaks.
- Students: Those planning to study abroad, particularly in countries with prevalent meningitis.
- Healthcare workers and aid workers: Individuals working in regions with a high incidence of meningitis.
