Rabies

What is rabies?

Rabies is a viral infection that affects the central nervous system and is almost always fatal once symptoms appear. It is transmitted to humans through the bite or scratch of an infected animal, most commonly dogs, bats, raccoons, and foxes.

Due to its severe nature, preventive measures, including vaccination, are crucial for travellers to high-risk areas.

Importance of rabies vaccination

Rabies is present on every continent except Antarctica, with the highest risk in Africa, Asia, and Latin America. Travellers visiting these regions, especially those engaging in activities that might bring them into contact with animals, should consider rabies vaccination a key part of their travel health preparations.

Our participating pharmacies provide the rabies vaccine as part of our travel health services. The rabies vaccine is highly effective in preventing the disease and is recommended for travellers who may be at risk.

How does the rabies vaccine work?

The rabies vaccine stimulates the immune system to produce antibodies against the virus, protecting if exposed. The pre-exposure vaccination consists of a series of three injections over 28 days.

Who should get vaccinated?

  • Travellers to high-risk areas: Those visiting countries where rabies is common, especially in rural areas.
  • Outdoor enthusiasts: Individuals planning activities such as hiking, biking, or camping where encounters with wild animals are possible.
  • Animal handlers: Veterinarians, animal researchers, and wildlife workers.
  • Children: They are more likely to approach animals and may not report bites or scratches.

Post-exposure vaccination

In the event of a possible rabies exposure (e.g. an animal bite), immediate medical attention is required even if you have been pre-vaccinated. Post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) will include additional doses of the rabies vaccine to ensure full protection.

Additional travel health tips

  • Avoid animal contact: Do not approach or handle wild or stray animals.
  • First aid: Clean any bite or scratch immediately with soap and water, and seek medical care as soon as possible.
  • Medical kit: Include first aid supplies and information on local medical facilities in your travel kit.

How much is a rabies vaccination?

£210.00 - £280.00 for 3-4 doses.
