Typhoid

What is typhoid?

Typhoid fever is a serious bacterial infection caused by Salmonella. It is transmitted through contaminated food and water, primarily in regions with poor sanitation. Typhoid fever can lead to severe illness, including high fever, abdominal pain, and gastrointestinal issues.

Importance of typhoid vaccination

Travellers to areas where typhoid is common, especially in parts of Asia, Africa, and Latin America, are at higher risk of contracting the disease. Vaccination is a crucial preventive measure to safeguard your health during travel.

Our participating pharmacies offer typhoid vaccines as part of our travel health services. There are two types of typhoid vaccines available:

  • Injectable vaccine: an inactivated vaccine given as a single injection.
  • Oral vaccine: a live attenuated vaccine taken as a series of capsules over several days.

Who should get vaccinated?

  • Travellers to endemic areas: Those visiting regions where typhoid is prevalent.
  • Humanitarian workers: Individuals working in disaster relief or settings with poor sanitation.
  • Long-term travellers: Those planning extended stays in high-risk areas.
  • People visiting friends and relatives: Travellers in local communities in endemic regions.
  • Additional travel health tips
  • Food and water safety: Drink only bottled or treated water, avoid ice cubes, and eat thoroughly cooked and served hot food.
  • Personal hygiene: Wash hands frequently with soap and water, especially before eating.
  • Medical kit: Carry a travel medical kit that includes rehydration salts and medications for treating fever and diarrhoea.
